RE: New Landfill Usage Guidelines & On Site Parking
31 July 2025
To our valued Denny Island community,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Patrick Braspenning and I am helping the Resort to make some changes so we can move forward into the future in a positive way. I know the communication from the Resort to the community might not have been the most elaborate or reliable in the past but I am here not to look back but to look forward, and to work together to find solutions, or at least have a dialogue together.
I am reaching out today to address a growing concern around the current use of the landfill site that Shearwater Resort manages, and to share our plan moving forward to ensure that the facility is used responsibly, safely, and sustainably.
In the short time I have been here I have experienced misuse of the facility, including unauthorized dumping and inappropriate commercial waste being left behind without consent. Locks have been cut frequently and since the Landfill was closed the bins at the Resort have become the new dumping ground. This has created serious operational and environmental concerns that I would like to address.
We are currently working with the proper Government departments to clean up the landfill and do some drilling to test ground water samples. We’re doing this to be a responsible and environmentally conscious operator of the landfill. We are also working with them on creating some additional area going forward. Needless to say that in these times labour is expensive and the last thing I would like to do is become a full time landfill operator.
To support proper and fair use, we are implementing a new landfill management plan effective immediately:
New Landfill Public Access hours:
Wednesdays and Saturdays
3:00PM to 5:00PM
Important Guidelines:
- Household waste may be dropped off free of charge during open hours at the landfill only.
- Absolutely no dumping of any kind is permitted in the Resort garbage bins — this includes both household and commercial waste.
- Commercial dumping will be monitored, assessed, and billed
- Recycling will be done at the recycling center and is the responsibility of each individual. We really need you to sort this correctly and make an effort to keep the area tidy. We ask you to bring cardboard to the landfill during opening hours.
A Shearwater staff member will be present during public access hours to monitor usage and ensure adherence to guidelines.
If you have commercial waste to dispose of, or have questions regarding the billing and payment procedure for commercial waste, please contact our office:

We are asking for your cooperation and understanding as we take steps to ensure the landfill is managed responsibly, fairly, and in a way that protects our environment and infrastructure.
Please do not leave cars, metals etc on Resort property, I don’t think its fair to make your problem ours. I am always willing to discuss possibilities but just dumping it on Resort property is not acceptable. The measures outlined in this letter are designed to create a sustainable waste system for everyone’s benefit, and to ensure that the service can continue.
*Note that as of August 1st 2025 we have briefly paused commercial dumping, as well as dumping of wood and metal materials. We will announce when the dump is ready to resume receiving these materials again.
RESORT PARKING
We are also asking your cooperation in regards to Resort Parking. We have short term parking next to the grocery store and that is just short term parking when shopping at the stores or visiting the Restaurant. We have made day parking available behind the Bar and Grill opposite the Staff Parking row for those needing to leave vehicles while using the Seabus to go to Bella Bella. That parking is not for overnight parking and any vehicles left there longer will be moved. Long term parking can be done in the parking area across from the wood mill, we just ask that you leave a note for us when you will be back. I would like to ask everybody to not park between the hotels or around the rest of the property as we are trying to make it look nice and tidy like a Resort should look again.
Thank you so much for your cooperation and I look forward to meeting everyone in person in the upcoming months.
Patrick Braspenning
